The I-95 Northbound Rappahannock River Crossing project included the design and construction of three new general purpose lanes for I-95 north, including a new bridge over the Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg, VA. As Wagman completed work on the I-95 Southbound Rappahannock River Crossing project at the same location in spring 2022.
The $107.5 million project awarded by the Commonwealth Transportation Board, reduces congestion and provides local traffic with an additional route of travel. The new general purpose lanes were constructed from Fall Hill Avenue to just South of Route 17, and CD lanes from the Route 3 Interchange to Fall Hill Avenue and south of Route 17 to Centreport Parkway. The lanes allow for local traffic to move between Virginia Route 3 (Exit 130) and the next interchange, U.S. 17 (Exit 133) without merging onto I-95 and impacting traffic flow.
During the 2021 construction season, the main emphasis was on completing work north of U.S. 17 to allow for tie-ins to the Fredericksburg Extension roadway.
Key Challenges & Project Details
- Both projects reduce congestion of the approximately 150,000 daily vehicles that pass through the area
- I-95 northbound connects with the Fredericksburg Extension which picks up where the 95 Express Lanes currently end
- Wagman’s Geotechnical Construction Group self-performed all support of excavation, pile driving, tiebacks and foundation work to include cofferdam construction at the river bridge
- A total of 248,000 CY of dirt was excavated
- Significant improvements were made to the existing recreational access road including widening, drainage upgrades, and better access to trails and the river
