Wagman’s Geotechnical Construction group was contracted to design and construct a temporary support of excavation system to facilitate expansion of the existing utility bunker adjacent to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Mansion in Mount Vernon, VA. This work was part of the ongoing historic Mount Vernon Mansion Revitalization project.
Wagman utilized specially selected soldier pile installation methods to minimize equipment size, vibration, noise, and soils produced. A top mounted bracing system was designed to provide optimal excavation access for subsequent construction of the bunker expansion and minimize lateral movement. Ultimately, Wagman’s design-build solution met performance requirements as well as logistical constraints and resulted in a mutually beneficial construction experience.
Key Challenges & Project Details
- George Washington’s Mount Vernon is a treasured historical site with numerous activities and attractions active on a continuous basis.
- The collective site conditions presented various challenges to constructing an effective support of excavation system in such close proximity to historic and existing underground structures.
- There were strict work area limitations including noise and vibration limitations.
- Wagman designed the temporary support of excavation including the braced soldier and pile lagging. The size of the project included 30’x50’ excavation up to 18’ deep.
