The West Nursery Road Bridge Movers project, the first of its kind in Maryland, involved construction of two replacement superstructures in the MD 295 median and a coordinated bridge move to remove the old superstructures along West Nursery Road over MD 295 and replace them with the two new superstructures. In order to remove an old superstructure and place a new superstructure in one weekend, Wagman used two Self Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) system units. During a move weekend, an existing superstructure was removed on Friday night, bearing pad demolition and construction took place on Saturday and the new superstructure was placed on Saturday night.
Key Challenges & Project Details
- Bridge moves took place under full detours of heavily travelled corridors surrounding the Baltimore Washington International Airport.
- The project involved overnight closures over two weekends, but traditional construction methods would involve prolonged road closures and construction for over six months.
- The existing superstructures had to be prepared for removal while maintaining all lanes of traffic on West Nursery Road.
- Per Maryland State Highway Administration specifications, grooving services were provided as part of the project’s scope of work.

The old bridges weighed about 300 tons each. Each of the new bridges weighs about 500 tons.

Two SPMTs were used in tandem to lift, transport and set the bridge superstructures.

Each SPMT consisted of 18 axles and 72 wheels.

The SMPTs were used to set the new superstructure and remove the old during weekend closures.
